We started Ruhee and Jacob’s engagement session in Pilsen, which felt like the obvious place to begin. Jacob’s family has lived in the neighborhood for generations, and it’s still a place they return to often when they’re in Chicago. Walking those streets together — past murals, corner bakeries, and the bright colors that make Pilsen feel like Pilsen — it was easy to see why it means so much to them.
Later we made our way downtown, stopping in the formal gardens along Michigan Avenue before ending at Buckingham Fountain, which Ruhee was seeing for the first time. It ended up being a really lovely mix of Chicago as it actually lives in its neighborhoods and the version people picture when they think of the city — the skyline, the lake, and that unmistakable sense of place.

Sessions like this are always my favorite — the ones that feel personal from the start. Sometimes that means traveling somewhere dramatic, but more often it means starting somewhere familiar. A neighborhood street, a corner café, the place your family has returned to for generations. Those places carry their own kind of story, and photographing people right where they feel at home always makes the images feel that much more honest.
