Planning Tips for Your Engagement Session

If you're planning an engagement session in the Chicago area, here are my best tips for your picture perfect photos.

Sunrise vs. Sunset

The best lighting for portraits happens at sunrise or an hour or two before sunset. Because of this, I always plan your session around the start or end of the day.

Sunrise: If you prefer a quiet, calm settings, describe yourself as a morning person and prefer to avoid the crowds, sunrise time can be quite magical for photos.

At this time of day, it truly feels like you have the entire city to yourself for your photos. Because the most gorgeous lighting happens promptly at sunrise, I recommend meeting before dawn. Bring your coffee mugs and be sure to plan a breakfast filled with mimosas to celebrate afterward.

Sunset: If early mornings aren't for you and you'd like to have the afternoon to schedule your makeup and hair appointments, sunset is most likely for you.

Majority of my clients will schedule their photos for this time of day. If we're shooting in the city or somewhere with skyline views, we'll likely take photos until all the city lights begin twinkling in the backdrop.

When to Schedule

There's truly no bad time of year for your photos in Chicago. Spring, summer, fall and winter all have an abundance of uniquely beautiful scenery to offer. Think about what seasons and time of year you enjoy best.

Maybe you love snow and chic winter coats... or maybe beach weather and boating is your calling. Consider what weather and temperatures you'll feel most comfortable taking your engagement photos.

As for day of the week: At this time, I typically only schedule engagement sessions Mondays through Thursdays. This is largely because my calendar is reserved for weddings which occur Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Where to Take Your Photos

Chicago is a beautiful city with so much to offer for engagement photos. We're lucky to be perfectly positioned along Lake Michigan and to have access so many scenic locales all within a few hours of driving away.

When I plan your engagement session, I like to ask about any places that are particularly special or sentimental to you. Maybe you love getting away to your lake house in Michigan... or maybe you live for evening strolls along the riverwalk and finding a scenic spot to watch the sun go down together.

I'll help pull together a creative plan for your engagement photos that is equally meaningful as it is beautiful.

A few of my personal favorite spots...

The lakefront... North Avenue Beach, Montrose Harbor, Promontory Point, the dunes in Indiana, the beaches in Michigan, the North Shore near Lake Forest...

The downtown riverwalk, the views from Wacker Drive, the architectural detail of Chicago's iconic bridges, charming cobblestone streets in the West Loop, chic bars and restaurants, pretty little rooftops.

Beautiful nature found at places like The Chicago Botanic Garden, the Morton Arboretum, Veteran Acre Park, Devil's Lake in Wisconsin, and so many scenic national parks and travel destinations throughout the country.

Destination Engagement Sessions

While most of my work is done in Chicago, I am available for portrait sessions across the country.

If you feel like we might be a good fit to work together, please complete my contact form and share more about your dream engagement portrait location.

I especially love capturing the beauty found in our National Parks, vibrant cities, coastal settings, Sedona (my favorite place), and anywhere with a gorgeous landscape.
