David & Julia | Rooftop Proposal in Chicago

David knew Julia would suspect something the moment he suggested they head up to the rooftop of their building for a drink. They rarely spend time up there, which made it just unusual enough to raise an eyebrow. When the elevator doors opened, he walked her outside to find white flowers, candles, and petals lining the space — thoughtfully arranged with the help of his sisters earlier that afternoon.

He didn’t overcomplicate it. He simply led her forward, took a breath, and got down on one knee. The emotions were immediate and big in the way only real moments are — a mix of surprise, relief, laughter, and tears.

They opened a bottle of Veuve to celebrate as the city settled into early evening around them. We captured a few quick portraits on the rooftop before I said my goodbyes — or at least pretended to. In reality, I slipped downstairs to Pippins, their favorite watering hole just below the building, where nearly forty of their closest friends and family were already gathered. When David and Julia walked in minutes later, the second surprise of the day began.

A Thoughtfully Planned Proposal Above the City

Proposals don’t need to be elaborate to be meaningful. Sometimes it’s as simple as candles, skyline views, and the right people waiting downstairs. If you’re dreaming up something similar, you can explore more of my engagement and proposal work here.
