There’s something especially good about a proposal that happens quietly. Carl had originally planned the Chicago Riverwalk, which makes sense given how much time they spend there, but when the moment came, he pivoted and proposed at home instead. No setup, no crowd, just the two of them in a space that already felt like theirs. It suited them.
Afterward, we met along the river at dusk for photos, and later they had a reservation at Tre Dita under the pretense of celebrating their anniversary, which felt very on brand for him.
It was one of those early spring Chicago evenings that leans cool and a little moody. No real sunset, just soft, even light that lingered longer than expected. Nicolette wore a black belted blazer dress with tights and boots, polished but still easy, while Carl kept things simple in a gray sweater. She’s warm and expressive, he’s quieter and more reserved, and together it balances in a way that feels natural right away.
We stayed along the river, walking and pausing without much structure, letting things unfold as they wanted. Her ring caught what light there was, a cluster of diamonds that felt substantial without being overdone. At one point, he glanced down at her hand again, like he was still taking it in.
There was a subtle shift in them throughout the hour. Nothing dramatic, just a little closer, a little more in sync. By the time they headed off to dinner, they still had that just-engaged feeling, like they were carrying something quietly exciting with them into the night.

I really loved the way he approached the proposal. Keeping it private took away any pressure to be dressed a certain way or to arrive at a specific place at the perfect time. Instead, he waited for the moment that felt right and let it happen naturally. And then, almost as a second surprise, they stepped into this engagement session while everything was still fresh. It became a way to hold onto the feeling of the day, rather than recreate it later.
